Customs and Duty Free in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a shopper’s paradise, with unbeatable prices, and an unending list of choices. However, there are some things to know about customs and duty free shopping in Hong Kong, to make sure your arrival into Hong Kong International Airport goes as smoothly as possible. Let’s get started!

Customs in Hong Kong

After arriving in Hong Kong and collecting your luggage, you will have to pass through Customs before getting to the Arrival Hall. Visitors should take the Green Channel if they have nothing to declare. Prohibited items are drugs, psychotropic substances, controlled chemicals, antibiotics, arms, ammunition, weapons, fireworks, strategic commodities, rough diamonds, animals, plants, endangered species, telecommunication equipment, game, meat, poultry, eggs and powdered formula.

Alcohol

Visitors aged 18 and above are allowed to bring 1 liter of liquor with an alcoholic strength above 30%, exempted from duty. Anything more must be declared in the Red Channel.

Tobacco

Visitors aged 18 and above are allowed to bring 19 cigarettes, 1 cigar, or 25 grams of other manufactured tobacco into Hong Kong. Anything more must be declared in the Red Channel. It is advisable to not exceed the limit to avoid paying very high charges.

Duty Free Shopping in Hong Kong

At Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), shop countless items at the Duty Free Shop (DFS), at lower prices, allowing passengers to save up to 30% on purchases, as compared to downtown prices in the city. The store offers a comprehensive selection of the finest liquor around the world. Exquisite quality at duty free prices means that the DFS should be everyone’s first stop on their shopping spree. Spirits on offer include Chivas Regal 18 Year Old, Hennessy VSOP, Hennessy X.O, Johnnie Walker Blue Label, and Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve. There are several locations, at Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and the SkyPier.

Apart from alcohol, there are various other high end items available at duty free.
